White kitchen countertops in a Baton Rouge, LA home

How to choose a color for your new countertops

While cabinets can be considered the “star” of the show, the kitchen countertops are the (often) scene-stealing supportive players and one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Countertops aren’t just functional places to prepare meals and store items but also an essential design tool, setting the room's tone and possibly becoming a focal point to run from floor to ceiling, wrapping around open storage in between windows and range hoods.

While there are many materials available to design countertops, we always recommend natural stone. These counters are gorgeous; for example, marble countertops automatically make you think of luxury. They add value to your home and are strong and heat resistant; you can even place hot pans on granite countertops and are non-porous, especially when sealed.

We carry granite, marble, quartz, and quartzite countertops. If you haven’t already done so, come into our showroom to explore our inventory. Now that you’ve decided on a new countertop, here are some of our tips for choosing a color.

Veining variations

Your color tastes will undoubtedly change with time, and you’ll want to repaint your kitchen with a different hue. If you match the countertops to the color scheme, they’ll look outdated when you change everything else. The answer is to have subtle splashes of color, and natural stone is a great way to do this; the unique but subtle veinings add spots of color without any bold, vivid saturation.

Pay attention to undertones

Everything, including paint, has an undertone. Please pay attention to them, or you’ll only create a jarring, confusing design. Some colors will distort rather than complement, and this is where a color wheel comes in; they’re about $20 in any hardware or art supplies store and will help you avoid a color clash.

Sample correctly

Looking at paint chips in a store might be fast, but it’s not the most accurate way. Look at them in your home, with your lighting and accessories, holding them in the proper position, as to how light usually hits it.
