Wholesale Flooring & Granite's complete engineered hardwood flooring FAQ

One of our favorite things about working in the flooring industry, is introducing people to new flooring solutions they might not have otherwise considered. In an effort to continue our mission of making flooring info as freely available as possible, we put together this quick FAQ about a material that might not be on your radar, engineered hardwood flooring.

So, with no further ado, here are the most common questions we get about engineered hardwood flooring at our Baton Rouge showroom!

Is it actually wood?

When people hear the words "engineered hardwood flooring", they often expect it to be a completely synthetic material. Actually, every part of engineered hardwood flooring is made from actual wood products. The attractive veneer is simply a thin layer of wood sliced to a specific thickness, and the core is made of a cheaper wood that is chosen for durability over aesthetics. So, the simple answer is yes, apart from the wear layer, it is real wood through and through!

Is it durable?

The main benefit of engineered hardwood flooring is that it is exactly that, engineered. This flooring is designed with durability in mind, from the ground up. The layers below the veneer are laid out in 90-degree angles to the layers above to create a tight, solid core that will hold up to just about anything. The wear layers that protect the veneer are specifically chosen to withstand erosion from gritty dirt, and repel forceful impacts harmlessly.

In addition to all that, engineered hardwood flooring can be sanded and refinished a number of times, depending upon the thickness of the wood. This means that even if your floors get damaged, they can be restored to like-new condition a couple of times throughout their service life.

Is it hard to maintain?

Simply put, no. These floors are no more difficult to maintain than a traditional hardwood floor, or just about any other hard-surface flooring material, for that matter. Just a bit of regular sweeping, and a rare pass with a damp mop is all it takes to keep them in stellar condition at all times.
