Stain resistant countertops in a Baton Rouge, LA kitchen

Can kitchen countertops stain?

Kitchens can be magnets for spills and our countertops take the brunt of it. Whether it is our morning tea or coffee, a red sauce from a pasta dish, or spilled merlot from an evening party, if your counters can stain, they will. So the question we hear is twofold: will they stain and are there kitchen countertops that don’t?

At Wholesale Flooring & Granite, we offer a wide range of countertops, but we specialize in counters made from granite, quartz, quartzite, and marble. For this article, these are the four surfaces toward which we will turn our attention. So, do they stain?

Granite countertops

We must state upfront, as our name implies, we are very partial to granite countertops. Each top is unique given the composition of the stone, they are very hard, and are highly resistant to scratches. As the adage goes, when it comes to cutting food on a granite countertop, you will damage your knife before you damage the top. Nevertheless, granite is a stone and unless it is properly sealed, can stain. Yet, when sealed properly, it is highly stain-resistant.

Quartz countertops

Quartz countertops are an engineered counter made from lots of little chips of quartz that have been bonded together. They are the lowest maintenance of any countertop we offer and are non-porous, making them easier to keep free of bacteria when you clean them. They are also virtually stain-proof.

Quartzite countertops

Quartzite is a single piece of quartz that has been mined, cut, and finished. They are quite attractive and in some cases, resemble marble. They are naturally very resistant to heat but are porous, meaning that they need to be sealed. Once properly sealed, these are very resistant to stains.

Marble countertops

Marble countertops are again a thing of beauty. They are slightly softer than granite, which also permits some more decorative touches in terms of beveled edges. Like Quartzite, they are also highly tolerant of heat, which makes them an excellent choice for use in the kitchen. Without being properly sealed and maintained, these can be prone to stains. Yet, if you are willing to do a little upkeep, these will serve you flawlessly for many years.
