Engineered Hardwood Flooring: The Eco-Friendly Choice

Over the past couple of decades, it has become abundantly clear that we all need to do our part to preserve and protect our environment in as many ways as we can. There is no aspect of our lives which hasn't been touched by this collective realization, and no change too small to make an impact. At Wholesale Flooring and Granite, we understand that many of our customers are doing their best to make ecologically sound choices. For that reason, we want to help you make an informed decision about your flooring options and a decision that's right for you, as well as the world we share.

If you are looking to minimize your impact on the environment, there is no better choice than engineered hardwood flooring. Although traditional hardwood flooring is, in itself, a great option environmentally, there are distinct advantages to engineered hardwood flooring you should probably know about.
According to a University of Wisconsin study, the production of engineered hardwood flooring uses less water and power than any other flooring option available, and does not contribute to the problem of global climate change.

Engineered hardwood floors are carbon neutral, because trees are a natural carbon sink that absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Amazingly, 1 cubic meter of living wood absorbs nearly 1 ton of CO2. Normally, upon death and decay, the CO2 is re-released into the atmosphere. However, wood harvested for use in flooring stores that carbon dioxide over the long service life of the floor. Furthermore, at the end of that long service life, the wood can be recycled.

Another major factor to consider is that younger trees absorb more CO2 than older trees. Therefore, the durable plywood used as a base for the veneers is made from faster growing trees, and the overall presence of younger trees is increased and replenished more frequently. Furthermore, the use of hardwood veneers in place of solid hardwood, helps mitigate the harvesting of slower growing hardwoods which are often prized for their beauty. It's a total win-win across the board.
